An EMDR intensive is an extended format of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy that allows for several hours of focused therapeutic work in a single day. Rather than working within standard 50-minute sessions, intensives provide more uninterrupted time for reprocessing distressing memories, addressing trauma-related symptoms, and developing more adaptive beliefs. This format can help maintain therapeutic momentum and support meaningful progress in a shorter timeframe, while still allowing each person's healing process to unfold at their own pace.
Uninterrupted Therapeutic Time
While standard EMDR sessions offer steady, ongoing support, intensives provide extended time to remain engaged in the therapeutic process without the usual time constraints of a 50-minute session.
More Continuous Emotional Processing
With fewer interruptions between sessions, there is more opportunity to maintain momentum and work through therapeutic material within a single extended session, rather than spreading the process across multiple weeks.
Greater Regulation and Integration
Extended sessions allow time to move between reprocessing, grounding, and reflection at a pace that supports emotional regulation and helps you process difficult material in a supported environment.
Pre-Intensive Intake and Preparation (Assessment and Strategy)
Before beginning an EMDR intensive, you'll complete a standard intake session and a preparation session to assess readiness and plan for our work together.
During these sessions, we will:
-
Review your history, current concerns, and treatment goals to determine whether an intensive is an appropriate fit.
-
Identify specific targets (memories, triggers, or beliefs) to focus on during the intensive.
-
Create a customized treatment plan.
-
Strengthen your resourcing and coping skills to help you prepare for the intensive processing.
The Intensive Hours (The Deep Dive)
Your intensive will typically take place in a focused 3-hour block. During this time, we will use an immersive EMDR format that allows for extended processing without the interruptions of a standard therapy session.
This includes:
-
Warm-up and Grounding: We begin with a check-in, review your current state, and activate your resources, such as a calm or safe place and grounding techniques, to support emotional safety before moving into active reprocessing.
-
Active Reprocessing (Core Work): We engage in focused EMDR reprocessing using bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements, tapping, or audio tones, to help reduce the emotional intensity of distressing memories, address trauma-related symptoms in the present, and support the development of more adaptive beliefs about yourself. Rather than relying primarily on conversation, EMDR facilitates an internal processing experience that can help change how distressing memories are stored and experienced.
-
Scheduled Breaks and Pacing: We incorporate breaks as needed to allow time for rest, regulation, and nourishment. The pace of the work is guided by your needs and readiness rather than pushing through discomfort.
-
Closure and Stabilization: Each intensive ends with a dedicated closure phase to help you regain a sense of stability and leave the session grounded and prepared to return to your daily activities.
Post-Intensive Follow-Up (Integration and Next Steps)
Following your intensive, we will schedule a separate integration session to review your experience and support continued processing.
Healing continues beyond the intensive hours, and this session gives us an opportunity to:
-
Review your progress, insights, and any changes in your symptoms or emotional responses.
-
Discuss your experience following the intensive and address any material that may have surfaced afterward.
-
Develop an aftercare plan to support integration into your daily life.
-
Determine next steps, including whether additional intensive hours or ongoing standard EMDR therapy would be beneficial.
Please Note: The initial intake, preparation, and post-intensive integration sessions are required and scheduled separately from your intensive hours to ensure adequate assessment, preparation, and support for integration. These appointments are billed at the standard session rate.
EMDR intensives may be a good fit for:
-
High-Achieving Professionals Facing Chronic Burnout: You feel chronically exhausted, trapped in perfectionism, and unable to truly turn off your mind—no matter how many weekends or vacations you take. Your workplace stress isn't just everyday fatigue; it is a sign of your nervous system being stuck in survival mode due to underlying, unresolved trauma. EMDR intensives for professionals in Jersey City and Hoboken target the root experiences driving these exhausting habits, helping your body finally step out of survival mode and find real rest.
-
Adults Healing from Attachment Injuries & CPTSD: You struggle with relationship anxiety, deep-seated fears of rejection, or a harsh internal critic rooted in childhood emotional neglect or past relational wounds. Traditional therapy can sometimes feel like spinning your wheels—opening up a painful memory only to have to pack it away 30 minutes later. An intensive provides the continuous, uninterrupted space needed to safely reprocess attachment trauma and CPTSD without a disruptive "stop-start" loop.
-
Anyone Seeking Accelerated EMDR Therapy: You already recognize the clinical power of bilateral stimulation but simply do not have the calendar space to commit to recurring, weekly, appointments for months on end. You want a condensed, highly efficient therapeutic framework that honors your time and fast-tracks your symptom relief.
EMDR intensives are NOT a good fit for individuals who: Are currently in acute crisis or require stabilization prior to trauma processing, are experiencing active psychosis, severe dissociation, or active substance dependence affecting safety or stability, or are currently unable to use basic grounding or self-regulation skills needed for intensive trauma work.

Frequently Asked Questions About EMDR Intensives in Jersey City & Hoboken
Absolutely. Chronic career burnout among high-achieving professionals in Jersey City and Hoboken is rarely just about a heavy workload. It is often rooted in underlying trauma or long-standing survival patterns—such as perfectionism, people-pleasing, or the core belief that your worth is entirely tied to your productivity. EMDR intensives target and reprocess the root memories driving these exhausting habits. This allows your nervous system to finally step out of survival mode and experience true, lasting relief.
Yes, when paced correctly. Relational trauma and childhood emotional neglect are deeply layered. This is exactly why the standard 50-minute model can feel frustrating—it can feel like opening a painful wound only to have to patch it up 30 minutes later. The extended timeframe of an intensive provides the dedicated space needed to safely reprocess layered attachment injuries and CPTSD without a disruptive "stop-start" loop. We place a massive emphasis on building your internal coping resources during our pre-intensive assessment to ensure you feel secure, supported, and grounded throughout the entire process.
Yes. Research and clinical practice show that online EMDR therapy is just as effective as in-person therapy. Doing EMDR from the comfort, privacy, and safety of your own home in Jersey City, Hoboken, or anywhere in New Jersey or Pennsylvania can actually make it easier for your nervous system to regulate. We use secure, HIPAA-compliant online platforms to facilitate visual or auditory bilateral stimulation, and we ensure you have solid grounding techniques in place before we begin.
No. Insurance companies do not typically cover extended, multi-hour intensive therapy blocks, meaning these packages are an out-of-pocket investment.
The investment for an EMDR intensive is $750.
This flat fee covers a comprehensive, 3-hour block of dedicated, uninterrupted EMDR therapy. By removing the standard 50-minute weekly time limits, we eliminate the administrative start-and-stop of traditional therapy. This model maximizes your clinical time, allowing us to complete deep processing work and accelerate your path toward healing in a single, focused block of time.
What’s included:
-
Custom Clinical Design: Specialized, behind-the-scenes preparation and protocol mapping tailored entirely to your history and goals.
-
3 Hours of Continuous Processing: A focused, deep-dive session designed to safely process memories, triggers, or negative beliefs without interruption.
It is completely normal and common to require additional time. While a 3-hour EMDR intensive facilitates accelerated progress–offering the therapeutic equivalent of roughly 3 weeks of traditional therapy in a single day–every nervous system processes trauma at its own pace. Because deep healing is a unique process, a single 3-hour block may not clear every trauma target or entirely eliminate the need for ongoing integration or future therapy.
If we complete your initial package and determine that additional processing is needed, you have two flexible options to continue your care:
-
Secure an additional 3-hour intensive block for $750: If additional focused processing would be beneficial, we can schedule another 3-hour block to continue working through remaining trauma targets and build on the progress made during your initial intensive.
-
Standard 50-minute EMDR therapy: If you prefer to continue at a more gradual pace, we can transition to traditional EMDR therapy sessions, meeting weekly or bi-weekly to continue processing and integrating the remaining material.
Yes. Because an EMDR intensive requires reserving a dedicated, multi-hour block of clinical time, a 50% non-refundable deposit is required at the time of booking to secure your dates. The remaining 50% balance is automatically processed 24 hours prior to your scheduled session. Full details regarding scheduling and cancellation policies will be provided in your initial intake paperwork.
